The area filter can be set to on screen, anywhere, or you can choose area.

Analysis under choose area does not require you to have the full area visible on screen. The analysis results box and vessel list will include all the vessels in the area even if they are not visible on the map.

Try it out: Setting the area to anywhere, then filtering to Japanese longliners registered with the CCSBT, will load quickly for a short time frame. Once filtered you can extend the time frame to show 6 months of activity. This query will take a moment to load.

You can use Starboard to compare changes in activity from AIS reporting vessels at different points in time.

The analysis results box will give you a count of vessels and their type and flag based on the area, time, vessel, and tag filters you have set. When comparing these counts it is worth noting that differences may not always indicate a change in actual vessel activity. Other factors such as increased or decreased AIS reporting or changes to Starboard’s AIS data sources could be the cause of these changes.

Additionally, you can explore factors such as the sea surface temperature, changes in counts of flag states, and the position of vessels in an area.

You can explore long travel histories for all vessels that have been in your area of interest. When you use the choose area filter only vessels that have been in that area during your filtered time frame are loaded and you can explore their movements on the map or their last port visits on the vessel list tab in the analysis results.

When you navigate away from an area, you have selected, the option to show vessels on screen will appear.
