Combining areas and filters in Starboard is a powerful way to understand vessel behaviour and share complex analysis in real time.
Using filters to uncover noteworthy vessels
When you combine multiple filters such as anomalous movements, loitering, high risk flags, encounters, missing AIS, and/or past port visits–noteworthy vessels start to emerge. Your analysis may reveal high risk vessel behaviours or characteristics, for example a modus operandi for illegal activity. The characteristics identified through complex filtering can be used to create, save, and share custom queries for continuous monitoring of activity of interest.
Applying vessel activity filters is a bit slower than other filter types as there are billions of events being filtered.
Using filters to assess vessels entering your area of interest
Once you have identified potential activities of interest using filters, you can draw complex geofences for further analysis, filtering, and alerting.
Try it out: See this vessel arriving in the newly created area of interest, before beginning to spoof its AIS location.
The vessel list pane can also be useful to quickly assess noteworthy activity for vessels entering an area of interest. Sorting on key events in the journey can uncover abnormal behaviours or encounters worth further investigation.
Try it out: See vessels arriving in the area of interest, sorted by the greatest loitering duration.
Tip: Once you have set up your analysis you can copy the web link (URLs) to return to it later or share with others in the team. Learn more: Sharing your analysis with other Starboard users.
Using the Areas page to share and manage your custom areas
You can share your areas of interest with others in your organisation or groups. This allows you to collaborate on monitoring, analysis, and investigations more efficiently.
The Areas page also lets you request edits to areas that have not been created by members of your group, as well as download them to your computer as a geojson file.
