The Measurement tools allow users to:

To access the Measurement tools, click the Ruler icon in the top-right corner of your map interface, next to the Map layers icon.

Circle Measurement

The Circle measurement tool can be used to:

  • Plot coordinates in the format specified in your account preferences

  • Measure the radius of a circular area

  • Change your unit of measure

To access these functions, select the Circle option from the Measurement tools. A measurement panel will appear to the left of your map, and a blue circle will appear in the centre of the map.

From here, you can click and drag the circle to reposition it anywhere on the map. The coordinates in the Measurement panel will dynamically update as you move the circle’s centre point. You can also click and drag the perimeter of the circle to expand or contract its size, or manually adjust the value in the Radius field.

To plot a specific location, manually enter coordinates into the Lat and Lon fields in the Measurement panel to define an exact centre point for the circle. The coordinate format depends on your account preferences. You can change these preferences in your account settings or by clicking Change units in the Measurement panel.

Changing your preferred units of measure will apply to all aspects of your account, not just the Circle tool.

To delete the circle from the map, click the trash can icon in the Measurement panel.

Line Measurement

The Line measurement tool can be used to:

  • Plot two coordinates on the map

  • Measure the distance between two points

  • Calculate speed of travel between two points

  • Change your unit of measure

To access these functions, select the Line option from the Measurement tools. A measurement panel will appear to the left of your map, and a blue line will appear in the centre of the map.

From here, you can click and drag the line to reposition it anywhere on the map. The endpoint coordinates in the Measurement panel will dynamically update as you move the line. You can also click and drag each endpoint to extend or shorten the line, or manually adjust the numerical values in the Lat and Lon fields for each endpoint.

To plot specific locations, manually enter coordinates into the Lat and Lon fields in the Measurement panel to define the exact endpoints of the line. The coordinate format depends on your account preferences. You can change these preferences in your account settings or by clicking Change units in the Measurement panel.

In addition to plotting and measuring a straight line, this tool allows you to calculate vessel travel speed between the two endpoints. You can manually enter either the Distance or the Speed in the Measurement panel, and the other value will be automatically calculated based on the positions of the endpoints.

To delete the line from the map, click the trash can icon in the Measurement panel.

Measurement Tools in Practice

Starboard's measurement tools, vessel information and vessel track histories can be used for detailed analysis of a vessel’s movements in marine protected areas.

Try it out: See vessels sheltering from a storm in June 2021 including a 54m long factory trawler, drifting to within 1.2nm from Auckland Island, possibly in violation of the management plan and causing a biosecurity risk.

Try it out: See a vessel anchored for over 4 days <300m from shore at an unapproved anchorage location, potentially in violation of the Regional Coastal Plan for the remote Auckland Island in the New Zealand EEZ.
