Some fishing vessels use AIS transponders on their fishing gear—this is particularly common with longline vessels. In Starboard these are generally identified as buoys.

By default buoys are turned off; however, you can add them as a map layer.

Buoys that consistently have tracks around a vessel are likely associated with that vessel. Selecting these buoys can provide a much more detailed view of a vessel’s fishing activity. This can be particularly helpful when a vessel has missing AIS data.

Try it out: See the buoy movements of a vessel which reported on AIS only 79 times in a three day period. During this time one of its buoys (LQ2330) reported as many as 984 times.
